Duties: The position includes teaching, research and administration. Teaching duties include course responsibility, course administration and supervision of post graduate students.The holder shall also keep abreast of developments within the subject area and the developments in wider community that are significant for the work at the university. A position as associate senior lecturer aims to qualify for a teaching position with higher assessment criteria.

The research relates to participation in the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with data analysis to search for new physics beyond the standard model, including charged Higgs bosons. The work also includes the operation of the ATLAS experiment  and development of e-Science for simulation and analysis.

Appointment Period: The position can be held for a maximum of four years. An associate senior lecturer can apply for promotion to senior lecturer. If the associate senior lecturer is deemed suitable and fulfills the criteria for promotion established by the Faculty Board he/she shall be promoted to and employed as senior lecturer.

Qualifications Required: According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance those qualified for appointment as associate senior lecturer are a person who has obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent competence at most seven years prior to the end of the application period.

According to Uppsala University´s appointments regulations, teaching expertise is an eligibility requirement for appointment as an associate senior lecturer. To obtain teaching expertise, the applicant should have participated in teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising at least five weeks, or be considered to have acquired the equivalent competence. If it has not been possible to acquire this qualification prior to employment, qualifying training for teachers in higher education shall be completed during the first two years of employment.

A general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must possess the personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment.

Documented ability to teach in Swedish and/or English is a requirement unless special reasons prevail. The holder is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

Assessment Criteria/Ranking
Research Expertise and Teaching Expertise: The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise which will be given equal importance. Research expertise comprises research merits as well as the applicant´s potential to contribute to future development of both research and teaching. In assessing research expertise special,  emphasis will be placed on proven scientific initiative and leadership, and the ability to achieve research results in the analysis of data from proton collider experiments.  Assets include experience in data analysis aimed at the discovery of Higgs bosons or other elementary particles predicted by theories beyond the Standard Model, as well as the use and development of the World LHC Computing Grid. Focus is also put on involvement in outreach and the ability to communicate this type of research.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise. Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration.

All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.

In filling this position the University aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

In an overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, parental leave, part-time work relating to care of children, union assignments, military service, or the like are to be regarded as work experience.

Energy-efficient computer resources which adapt its capacity to the needs of the application. This is the objective of the project “Cloud Control” which was recently awarded 20 million SEK from the Swedish Research Council. A group of researchers from Umeå and Lund under the leadership of professor Erik Elmroth from the Department of Computer Science at Umeå University, will develop methods and tools to handle resources and services in future computer centers with distributed systems of virtual machines.
The main goals of the project are:

• to optimize the usage of servers
• to predict the usage peaks for specific applications so that the number of virtual machines that are needed can adapt in time
• to optimize the physical placement of the servers in order to reduce cooling requirements

The project will receive funding during five years.

The bioinformatics community is adopting novel cloud computing technologies to cope with the challenges set forth by complex data integration tasks and NGS data masses. The hackathon will focus on next challenges that cloud adoption poses: massively distributed data processing frameworks such as Hadoop, distributed cloud databases and distributed bioinformatics applications.

High Performance Computing Center North cordially invites you to participate in the inauguration of Abisko, the new HPC2N supercomputer system. The morning program offers a tutorial and the afternoon program includes presentations by scientists using Abisko, state-of-the-art technical and R&D overviews and the formal inauguration of Abisko.

The procurement of Abisko was made possible through a grant from the Swedish National Metacenter VR/SNIC and the support of Umeå University.
